In a significant development, the United Kingdom announced on Monday, September 4, that starting from November 15, 2023, travelers from Nigeria and other countries, except British and Irish nationals, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK. This requirement applies to all individuals, including children.
Under the new travel rule, anyone applying for a UK visa must secure an ETA card prior to their journey. The UK Home Office clarifies that this mandate primarily affects those who were previously eligible to visit the UK without a visa and are not already legal residents in the country.
The ETA requirement encompasses various categories of travelers, including tourists, businesspeople, and those visiting family and friends. Prospective visitors must apply for their ETA online before making any travel arrangements to the UK. Once approved, the ETA will be valid for multiple journeys over a two-year period or until the expiration of the applicant’s passport.
Importantly, the UK Home Office underscores that travelers with valid visas may be denied boarding if they do not possess a valid ETA, as this electronic authorization is digitally linked to their passports.
A statement from the UK Home Office highlights the key points of the new travel requirements: “The UK travel requirements are changing. Except for British and Irish citizens, everyone, including children, intending to enter or transit through the UK will soon need prior permission. This means that if you were previously eligible to visit the UK without a visa and are not already legally resident in the UK, you will require an electronic travel authorisation (ETA). Your stay must be shorter than six months and could encompass tourism, visiting family and friends, transit, business, and short-term study.”
The statement further clarifies that travelers need not carry a paper copy of their ETA but suggests keeping a confirmation email for personal records. It is important to note that while an ETA grants permission to travel to the UK, it does not guarantee entry. Travelers will still need to undergo passport control at the border, and it’s essential to present the same passport used for the ETA application, ensuring its validity for the entire duration of the stay in the UK.
