Meet Dr. Walter C. Eze (MA, MD), a trailblazer who held the distinction of being Nigeria’s first Military Medical Doctor. Born on November 13th, 1925, into the esteemed lineage of His Royal Highness Michael Eze, Okofia I, and Eze n’Ukpo, the traditional leader of the Ukpo Kingdom in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra state.

A product of excellence, he received his early education at the renowned Anambra secondary school, The Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, from 1941 to 1945. His quest for knowledge led him overseas to Canada, where he pursued Medicine. Subsequently, he embarked on further studies in the United States of America, earning a Masters degree in Experimental Surgery. His dedication extended to military service, as he attained the rank of Captain in the Royal Canadian Army.

Upon returning to Nigeria, he not only embraced his ancestral role as the traditional ruler of Ukpo but also established his mark in the medical field. Dr. Eze’s legacy encompassed the founding of the prestigious Toronto Hospital in Onitsha, where he served as the Medical Director. Notably, he was also the elder sibling of the prominent oil magnate, Eng. Arthur Eze.

In 1959, Dr. Eze united in matrimony with his beloved, Justina Nebechianya Okafor, and together they were blessed with the joy of four children. His life and achievements continue to inspire generations, leaving an indelible impact on both the medical landscape and the community he held dear.
