As the 9th Assembly concludes with a valedictory session, Anambra South Senatorial District stands proud, counting their blessings and looking forward to a brighter future. Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, their re-elected representative, has undeniably placed the district on the map of astounding development, delivering remarkable dividends of democracy during his tenure.
Despite being elected on the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), a relatively new political party at the time, Senator Ubah wasted no time and hit the ground running. He skillfully secured representation for his party in over 35 committees in the Senate by advocating for the inclusion of every political party, utilising a Senate rule to his advantage.
The remarkable achievements of Senator Ubah in various sectors such as health, education, road rehabilitation, markets, skill acquisition and empowerment programmes, and security have left both political observers and critics in awe. These accomplishments were delivered as a first-timer, despite facing numerous obstacles throughout his tenure.
Upon assuming office, Senator Ubah faced several court cases from defeated candidates and even encountered a fabricated judgement that purportedly declared him removed from office. However, he triumphed over all these challenges, earning the support and celebration of the people of Anambra South Senatorial District.
When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Senator Ubah sprang into action. Rallying his friends and contacts, he mobilised funds for the construction of isolation centres and hospitals to combat the health crisis and save lives. Over half a billion naira was raised within four months, with contributions from the Anambra Progressives and Development Union and his friends across different ethnic backgrounds.
Furthermore, Senator Ubah transformed the healthcare sector in Anambra State by building and equipping state-of-the-art hospitals and isolation centres in two out of the three senatorial districts. Additionally, he initiated the construction of health centres in several local government areas within Anambra South Senatorial District, enhancing access to quality healthcare for the people.
During the Endsars protests, while many politicians sought refuge due to safety concerns, Senator Ubah fearlessly took to the streets of his district without any security detail. He effectively engaged with the protesting youths and played a crucial role in quelling the riots, preventing widespread destruction, and preserving businesses. He also extended his projects to all 119 wards in his district, solidifying his grassroots support.
Notably, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah earned the moniker ‘The Prince of the Ninth Senate’ from his colleagues, becoming the first senator in Nigerian history to be given such a title. This recognition stemmed from his groundbreaking bill, which has since become law and contributes billions of naira in revenue to the federal government annually.
In the face of persistent insecurity plaguing the senatorial district, Senator Ubah has taken on the responsibility of implementing the Anambra South pilot security scheme. This initiative, currently underway in Nnewi, the economic and political capital of the district, aims to restore safety, boost businesses, and revive the nightlife.
As the 9th Assembly concludes, the city people of Anambra South Senatorial District can celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and eagerly anticipate more dividends of democracy in the 10th Assembly. Senator Ubah’s dedication, legislative strides, and project delivery demonstrate his profound capacity and love for his constituents. May God continue to guide and protect him.
