The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a warning to the Federal Government, signalling their intent to resort to peaceful protests if their demands are not met. The association, representing the interests of resident doctors across the country, has expressed their frustrations with the government’s inaction regarding critical issues affecting the healthcare sector. In a circular addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, NARD outlined their plan to embark on nationwide mass protests and picketing starting from August 9, 2023.
The Nigerian healthcare system has long been plagued by numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient funding, and a shortage of medical personnel. Resident doctors, who play a crucial role in the healthcare delivery system, have been at the forefront of these issues, facing numerous hardships while attempting to provide quality care to patients.
In the circular titled ‘Notice of nationwide mass protests and picketing by NARD,‘ the association emphasised that their demands are aimed at seeking immediate solutions to the pressing issues within the healthcare sector. According to them, the reason for the protest is as a result of “the decay and corruption in the health sector, as well as the neglect the public health institutions have suffered all these years that led to repeated industrial actions”.
Failure to address these demands could have dire consequences for the Nigerian healthcare system. Resident doctors, who represent a significant portion of the healthcare workforce, may become demotivated and disheartened, leading to a decrease in the quality of patient care. Furthermore, an exodus of skilled doctors seeking better opportunities abroad could exacerbate the existing brain drain problem in the country.
As the August 9th deadline approaches, tension is mounting within the healthcare community. The proposed peaceful protests and picketing are intended to draw attention to the urgent need for government intervention in the healthcare sector. NARD plans to picket the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and federal and state tertiary health institutions across the country to amplify their demands.
